The Matrona of Ephesus
Part I. Reading: Petronius, Satyricon 111-112, Matrona
Ephesi
Petronius' story of the matron of Ephesus provides a comprehensive
review of much of the grammar commonly covered in a high school Latin 2 course.
I begin my Latin 3 course with it so that my students have an interesting text
to read while they review the grammar of the previous year.
The annotated passage, arranged as follows in PDF format, can be
accessed here:
- Pages 1-23 contain first the complete uninterupted Latin text,
then my full introduction to the context of the story, followed by the Latin
story divided into segments with accompanying vocabulary, notes, and discussion
questions.
- Pages 24-36 contain an Appendix of necessary vocabulary words,
words listed by frequency, and a grammar review of the forms of pronouns and
personal adjectives.
Part II. Quiz: Text & Image
This quiz/exercise provides an excellent assessment of the ability of
students to understand Petronius' Latin. Click
here for image, instructions and
exercise.
