The earliest remains of the Atrium Vestae date from the Republican period. The house with its north-south orientation (#15, yellow lines) around the Temple of Vesta (#1) retained its traditional shape until 64 CE, when it was destroyed in the fire of 64 CE under Nero. The foundation shows evidence of a cult shrine (#2), blocks from the Republican period re-used in the Imperial period (#3), and a kitchen (#4).
